Revenge of Shinobi - End of the road festival - 13/09/08

Revenge of Shinobi (most probably named after the classic Megadrive cartridge of the same name), are at once, beautiful, thoughtful, compelling and phantasmagorical. Their influences are many, but the sound that emits from the stage is always utterly unique.

When I listen, I am transported to a funky, post rock carnival, haunted by (hip and aloof) apparitions, with the band acting as the musical medium. Take a listen and you should partially understand this strange rhetoric…

When they start to play; the aforementioned apparitional vocals are juxtaposed with minimal, melodically cacophonous, guitar work and very danceable drums. My feet start moving (reservedly, that’s just me), and don’t stop for the entire gig. Great stuff!

My feet move especially rhythmically to House 1, which builds, builds, builds - to dangerous euphoric heights, and More Dogs, which infuses the mix with a bit more anger - or some kind of poltergeist.

Unfortunately, a few sound issues tarnish proceedings slightly. The drums are booming, and the vocals not quite piercing enough – this is the bane of any fledgling act. However, my familiarity with the tracks ensures that I still enjoy the set. The playing is as tight as ever.

Next gig is at the FreeButt on the 28th of October, and I strongly advise you to go. And dance.
