Raised on Replicas: Greenhouse Effect: 24.04.08

Despite being relatively unknown, the Silver Jews inspired Raised on Replicas are one of the best bands in Brighton. No doubt.

Why are they so good ye ask?

I reply rhetorically, by asking if you’ve ever witnessed gigs of arrogant, pretentious, over-hype, then walked away underwhelmed?

Before you can counteract, I but in and opine “Style over substance, there’s too much of it around! And Raised on Replicas do it better, much better!”

But how are they better? Ye may ask, whilst squinting in annoyance through vagueness…

Well, they’re just good; they write great songs, recalling some of the best of late/early 90’s post-grunge; The Lemonheads, Sonic Youth, Pavement, Blur, Royal-Trux, a selection of some of their stellar influences, and ROR do it just as well.

For me, Defenders is the pick of the songs. It’s sardonic, wasted melody is complimented by a wonderful, meandering anti-guitar riff; brilliant, inspiring stuff.

No gigs currently booked, but when there is one, it’ll be covered here! I urge ye to go and see them (and bring pets, the dead, or most easily pets of the dead). Especially if you’re tired of your usual melodic condiments and need some refreshment…
